#GirlsinICT Day , 24 April 2014: Training for Visually Impaired Young Girls on Social Media Networking and Blogging

The emerging technology has made the world smaller day by day, yet some population of the world is still far apart of the knowledge where the world is leading in coming future. Though we all have access to technology, we are not aware on the upcoming opportunities on ICT. Our world is bounded and limited within few inches of the technology like laptops, computers, iPhones, Tablets, Mobiles, etc. But we never knew the world behind them, because we still lack the platforms for information sharing and learning opportunities. In the competitive world, where we talk about gender equality, women’s empowerment, employment and decent work for all, there is yet to go miles to fill the gaps as of now, we need implementation on the solutions more than documentation of the issues. While talking about ICT, it has changes lives of entire world, yet depending fully on ICT, there is still a big gap between able and differently able people. There is a need of opportunity and information sharing which seems possible due to the applications of ICT. ICT plays a major role to enhance the lifestyles of such differently able people and provide them a platform to create opportunity for themselves.

On the occasion of Girls in ICT Day 2014, 24 April, BYND2015 Nepal Hub will be launching a training program for visually impaired young girls on social media networking and blogging.

International Girls in ICT Day is an opportunity for girls and young women to see and experience technology in a whole new light. It is also an initiative backed by ITU Member States in Plenipotentiary Resolution 70 (Guadalajara, 2010) to create a global environment that empowers and encourages girls and young women to consider careers in the growing field of information and communication technologies (ICTs). International Girls in ICT Day is celebrated on the 4th Thursday of April every year. International Girls in ICT day will be observed on 24 April 2014. #ITUWORLD Young Innovators Competition 2014

An integral part of ITU Telecom World events since 2011, the Young Innovators Programme works with innovative young people from all over the world who are using technology to transform their communities and their social reality. Each year, the Young Innovators Competition invites talented, technologically-minded young people to compete for one of the prestigious places in the programme. This year, ITU Telecom and the competition sponsors will launch a range of challenges for young innovators to solve in the months leading up to ITU Telecom World 2014 this December.

This year we will be doing things a bit differently. First, the Competition will be hosted at ideas.itu.int which will allow you to see, vote and comment on entries. It will give us a place to keep you up to date on the progress of the challenges and all the news related to the competition.

Second, this year, instead of launching all of our challenges at once, we will be bringing you a series of challenges one after another, leading up to ITU Telecom World 2014 in Doha this December 7-10. As always, the top participants will be brought to Telecom World for an accelerator programme of pitching, hands-on workshops and mentoring – plus up to USD 10 000 in funding. Each challenge will have a different theme and focus, and some might even include some surprises.

For our first challenge, we are teaming up with Ooredoo to look for bright sparks with big ideas on local digital content. We’re looking for the most promising tech start-ups aimed at inspiring the creation, aggregation or digitization of local content, particularly in non-Latin scripts. This may involve local script content, or resolving the technical challenges of digitizing non-Latin scripts through innovative technologies, or fresh uses for older technologies such as optical character recognition voice recognition or translation software.

#UNFCCC Simulation on COP19, Warsaw in Kathmandu

BYND2015 Nepal Hub hosted the first ever COPinMyCity event in Asia entitled as COPinMyCity: Warsaw in Kathmandu on 16 November 2013. Facilitated by Ms. Kabita Gautam, Founder of BYND2015 Nepal Hub, the overall program was coordinated in three steps in Nepal.

• Before COP19 → An online campaign entitled Climate Relay was organized during which  the main priority for UNFCCC Climate Negotiations on youth perspectives were generated. The objective of this event was to make some noise and mobilize citizens and young people in the cities during the COP for everyone to know what’s going on in the negotiation processes.
• During COP19 → A Simulation on UNFCCC COP19 was organized on 16 November 2013 with the support from Himalayan Institude of Science and Technology (HIST) and Mocrosoft Innovation Center Nepal (MICN) in order to reach as many people as possible and to ensure that everyone understands what is at stake as simulation games are one of the best tools to make people understand climate negotiations and climate issues. During the event, the role play was done by the participants representing one country from each of the parties: Annex I, Annex II and Non-Annex I. There were separate youth group whose voice were also included in the negotiation process. Some of the youth also acted as the president and secretary of COP as well as president of Nepal. The simulation was followed by a group discussion and World Cafe on different issues of Climate Change.
• After COP19 → A Debriefing was done after complition of all the major events during which all the outcomes were compiled from Climate Relay, Simulation and World Cafe. The Debriefing came out with some important feedback on COPinMyCity project which was shared and discussed with COPinMyCity team.

OUTCOME: COPinMyCity: Warsaw in Kathmandu finally came up with a declaration, “Youth Call for Climate Action“.

Similarly, many other events were organized by youth from global level under the guidance of CliMates, the main host of the project COPinMyCity.

COPinMyCity: Warsaw in Kathmandu

COP in MyCity is a youth-led project which ambitions to bridge the gap between climate negotiations (a.k.a. COPs) and the mainstream public, foster education and action about climate change locally and create an international community of youth climate leaders committed to the success of COP21 (2015). As COP19 will happen in Warsaw, Poland, in November this year, all COP in MyCity initiatives for 2013 are called Warsaw in MyCity. The project will be repeated next years for COP20 and COP21.

BYND2015 Nepal Hub will host the first ever COPinMyCity event in Asia entitled as COPinMyCity: Warsaw in Kathmandu. The overall program will be based on three steps, to be implemented in Kathmandu:

• Before COP19 → We will be organizing a Flash Mob for Mobilization: Let’s make some noise! We need to mobilize citizens and young people in our cities during the COP for everyone to know what’s going on in the negotiation processes.
• During COP19 → We will be organizing Simulation for Education and Awareness-raising: in order to reach as many people as possible, we need to ensure that everyone understands what is at stake as simulation games are one of the best tools to make people understand climate negotiations and climate issues.
• After COP19 → Debriefing: This time is devoted to discussion within our team and within the COP in MyCity community. We will share the results of our simulations and get all our positions discussed. This is also the time where we will each discuss about what we can do at our city’s level to fight against climate

Our goals:

• Bring the expertise about climate change to young people and citizens, raise awareness about the COP and act locally by gathering climate actors in our cities.
• Influence the climate negotiations by building a common vision using the tool of simulation games.

The final objective?

COP21, which will take place in Paris in 2015. This is the deadline countries have set for themselves to come to a global agreement on cutting their carbon emissions, for the first time in the history of climate negotiations. We must act for COP21 to succeed and provide humanity with a strong legal framework to avoid catastrophic climate change.

#BYND2015: ICT Relay

BYND2015 Nepal Hub and its Asia Pacific Team in coordination with BYND2015: Global Youth Summit-ITU, is organizing ICT Relay via Facebook and Twitter globally. This event will be the first ever unique campaign of its own kind on POST 2015 supported by ITU which will be carried out for a week starting from 5 September till 11 September as the Global Youth Summit will kick off from 9 September and ends on 11 September 2013.

To bring #BYND2015 in trend globally and to address the future priorities for sustainable development, views from young people from around the world via online platform.

ICT for development and YOUNG PEOPLE engagement in POST 2015

Bynd2015 Nepal Hub is an official hub for the BYND2015 processes affiliated to International Telecommunication Union (ITU) which aims to engage young people in decision and policy making processes and other relative activities regarding Post 2015 Agenda. In context of Nepal, youth are quite familiar with the use of ICT but we lack the platform to raise our voice and incorporate our visions for development. Acknowledging the lack of youth involvement in such processes we have initiated BYND2015 Nepal Hub to bridge the vision of young people and decision of world leaders. To discuss about how ICT can enhance the development processes and why young people engagement is vital for POST 2015 agenda, BYND2015 Nepal Hub in collaboration with ITU, UNCSD MGCY, The World We Want and Microsoft Innovation Center Nepal, is organizing Google Hangout which will be hosted in two major cities of Nepal (Pokhara and Kathmandu).
